Silence, a not too successful group from the Welsh borders, were joined by session pianist and rock n roll hopeful Ian Hunter. Developed from Dylan obsessives to their own character over the course of four albums for Island. Very popular live (banned from the Royal Albert Hall after seat smashing incident precursor of punk rock), but no great record sales. Decided to split up, but then continued to record "All the Young Dudes", written for them by up and coming pop star, and fan - David Bowie. Three more albums and several pop hits before finally falling apart when Ian Hunter left in 1974.

Hymn For The Dudes Lyrics

Mott The Hoople

(ian hunter/verden allen)
God aint jive
For I can see his love
As it runs alive
n one by one
Through fields of rusted wire
The war has just begun
Oh, cross over shame like the wise dove
Who cares not for fame just for shy love
n rejoice for the king aint lost his throne, oh no
Hes still here, you are not alone
Correct your heads
For theres a new song rising
High above the waves
Go write your time
Go sing it on the streets
Go tell the world, but you go brave
Oh my sweet instant christian you are such a sly clown
Too many questions, no replies now
n rejoice for the king aint lost his throne, oh no
Hes still here, you are not alone
I got an idea
Go tell the superstar
All his hairs are turning grey
Star-spangled fear
As all the people disappear
The limelight fades away
Cos if you think you are a star
For so long theyll come from near and far
But youll forget just who you are (yes you will)
You aint the nazz
Youre just a buzz
Some kinda temporary
Cross over shame like the wise dove
Who cares not for fame just for shy love
Oh-oh, my sweet instant christian you are such a sly clown
Too many questions, no replies now
n rejoice for the king aint lost his throne. oh no.
Hes still here, you are not alone, you are not alone.
